Why is the second book so difficult to write

Many, many writers have a difficult time writing a second book after their first has been published. I’ve spoken to authors who didn’t have this same type of difficulty when they were writing a second book and the first one didn’t get them an agent or didn’t sell on submission, though. So I started thinking: what about the publishing process makes it difficult for authors who have written and published a debut to write their second book?
