Welcome, I'm Just Reading All Day
Publishing advice from a literary agent plus occasional thoughts on books & media
Hello! My name is Danielle Bukowski and I’m a literary agent. I loved Twitter, I hate X, I need to leave it, so I started a newsletter. I named the newsletter after the romanticized vision people have of working in book publishing, especially of what literary agents do: that we’re just reading all day.
In reality, my 9:30-6 is spent solving problems, answering emails, talking on the phone, taking meetings, preparing for and handling submissions to publishers; I read on my commute and in the evenings and on weekends.
So I’ll post on an irregular schedule about what I’m doing, without any specifics about my clients that’s not my business to share, plus thoughts on books and book world. That’ll be free, you can comment (my Twitter replacement.)
But for paying subscribers I’ll have more regular posts with publishing advice. I have been paid to give advice in a variety of formats (at writers’ conferences, in one-on-one meetings, on panels, on special zooms) and have a pretty good sense of what writers want to know and what would be helpful to demystify. I don’t think this will be a replacement for those types of meetings by any means, the structure and connections made are invaluable, and I take seriously my participation there and give personalized, thoughtful advice. Advice here will be more generalized but I hope it will be tangibly useful, and for a much lower price point. I welcome comments on this first post about what you’d like specifically to read about. (Per the AALA Canon of Ethics you cannot pay me to represent you and paying for a subscription does not guarantee anything.)
I’m working on getting a graphic design.
First free post will be about what I’ve been reading outside of work.
